Argonia, Kansas (S.M. Salter)

Susanna Madora Salter

America’s First Woman Mayor

Argonia will enchant you with the charming Salter House, home of Susanna Madora Salter, who was elected first woman mayor of Argonia and the USA in 1887. Constructed in 1884 from brick fired in a kiln near the home, the Salter House has been tastefully and traditionally restored as it might have been when Mrs. Salter lived there. An adjacent museum in the old Mayfield Church holds antiques and artifacts preserving the culture of the area. A city park has been named in honor of Mrs. Salter. Maintained by the Argonia and Western Sumner County Historical Society, the Salter House and Museum are open to the public. The house was put on the National Register of Historic Places in September, 1971.
